Many children in Montego Bay’s inner-cities have very little experience outside of gang-affiliated wars, deprivation and fear, resulting from the increasing crime rate facing St James. For varying reasons, some parents cannot afford the cost of uniforms and schools supplies to prepare their children to attend schools, or to send them to schools daily, as they often struggle to find essentials. This leaves the lives and futures of the children at risk, especially in single parents homes, where some children take on responsibilities to fend for themselves and their families.
With high levels of poverty within the inner-cities and some rural communities, many young boys in Montego Bay join gangs for financial support and wrong mentorship. Very often, the disadvantages faced during early childhood primarily, lack of financial support, results in subsequent problems during adolescence, leading into adulthood. Girls frequently become victims of widespread sexual violence, sex professionals and trade, as a result of seeking monetary support. Amidst this, child labour remains a problem in Montego Bay and the wider society. Very young boys especially, sell merchandise in the streets, wash car windshields, or resort to begging for money and food to survive.
